It's Graduation Time. Are Your Kids Covered? If you are enrolled in your employer's group health plan, you may have several options to continue medical, and in some cases dental or vision, coverage for your children after they graduate from high school or college.
Is your child enrolled as a dependent in your employer's medical plan? You may be able to continue medical coverage for your child until he/she reaches age 26, regardless of his/her marital status, student status, or residence. Dental and vision coverage may not be available.
Has your child reached the plan's age limit? When your child reaches the plan's age limit, COBRA provides for a continuation of the child's current medical, dental and/or vision coverage for an additional 36 months, by paying 102% of the insurance premium.
Does your child still need coverage past age 26? Some states require insured medical plans to extend coverage past age 26. The age limit, coverage and cost vary based on the state.
You may be eligible for some or all of these options, which have different costs and enrollment requirements. Check with your employer to understand your options before your child loses coverage.
